What goes into each doll? Janet sculpts each doll's face out of clay. Both the hands and the faces are made of clay that she then paints and varnishes for preservation purposes. The bodies are made from stuffed cotton material that has been painted, sanded, and repainted to give it the feeling of leather. The arms are connected with buttons and the knees are bead jointed so that sitting the dolls in a chair is a breeze. Some of Janet's dolls are made from an altered body pattern of Deanna Hogan's. It was Deanna who first taught Janet how to sew a doll's body. The sculpting Janet learned at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. The dolls are anywhere from 22" to 27" in length. Also seen on this page are 4 sculptures (2 Santas and 2 St. Nicks). All four sculptures are made of paper mache and clay and then clothed or painted.
